Bộ phim Ðức Phật, tác phẩm sẽ được thực hiện tại phim trường Hollywood của tập đoàn sản xuất BK Modi, đang dự định kết hợp với công ty tìm kiếm hàng đầu thế giới, Google, để thành lập một mạng lưới tìm kiếm một khuôn mặt phù hợp với vai trò chính -Ðức Phật- trong bộ phim, một cuộc mạo hiểm tốn kém $120 triệu của tập đoàn.
Trong một cuộc phỏng vấn dành riêng cho tờ báo Business Standard, chủ tịch tập đoàn làm phim “Ðức Phật”, Ông Modi, hiện là chủ tịch Hội Ðại Bồ Ðề Ấn Ðộ, người đang có văn phòng tại Hồ Ly Vọng, nói rằng thảo luận sơ khởi đã được thực hiện với Google cho việc săn lùng nhân tài trên toàn cầu.
Ông nói rất nhiều người đó đây trên thế giới tỏ ra thích thú trong vai trò Ðức Phật, nhưng không ai phù hợp với hình dung của Ðức Phật.
Ông nói “Một diễn viên hàng đầu của nền Ðiện Ảnh Nhật Bản đã tìm đến chúng tôi để nhận vai trò này. Nhưng nó không phải là một ý tưởng thích ứng. Chúng tôi muốn làm một bộ phim với chiều hướng mà nó sẽ trở thành một ví dụ điển hình đúng đắn về Ðức Phật cho Phật tử và nhân loại.
Căn cứ theo Modi, thể thức cuộc tìm kiếm vẫn còn đang được thảo luận với Google.
Ông tuyên bố rõ ràng rằng cuộc săn lùng sẽ dựa trên hình dung của Ðức Phật được sáng tạo bởi các kỹ sư đồ họa thiết kế vùng Thung lũng Silicon.
“Các nhu liệu đồ họa đã cho ra những hình ảnh tuyệt vời dựa trên lịch sử và những nguồn thông tin từ nhiều xã hội Phật giáo khác nhau, chúng tôi cần một khuôn mặt thích ứng với những hình ảnh đó. Tính chất của diễn viên đóng vai Ðức Phật cũng quan trọng”
Một vài tông phái cùng lúc đã tạo tác hình ảnh của Ðức Phật khác nhau. Ðức Phật đản sinh 6 thế kỷ trước Ðức Chúa tại Ca Tỳ La Vệ ở mộtvùng biên giới giữa Nepal và Ấn Ðộ hiện nay, trong một hoàng tộc và đã cấm đoán tạo tác bất cứ hình ảnh nào của Ngài.
Ðức Phật được biểu hiện bằng một ngai trống, hoặc một đôi chân hay một bánh xe
Tôn trọng lời khuyến cáo của Ðức Phật, Phật tử không tạo tác bấy cứ hình ảnh nào của Ngài cho đến 500 năm sau khi Ngài nhập diệt, khi các nghệ thuật gia của trường phái Gandhara tại Kandahar phối hợp ảnh hưởng Ấn -Hy và điêu khắc Ấn Ðộ ở Mathurađã tạo tác hình ảnh đầu tiên của Ngài.
Ba hình ảnh gây kinh ngạc của Ðức Phật đã bị Taliban phá hủy tại đồi Bamiyan, A Phú Hãn trong những năm vừa qua. Kiểu mẫu những hình ảnh như thế còn có thể được tìm thấy ở các hang động Ajanta và Ellora. Ấn Giáo, tôn trọng đức thánh của Ngài nhưng họ nói Ðức Phật là thân tái sinh của thần Vishnu và tạo tác thêm một số kiểu mẫu hình ảnh khác của Ðức Phật
Kinh điển đương thời miêu tả Ðức Phật như một người đã tỏa sáng an bình nội tại và Niết Bàn mà Ngài đã đạt được trong cuộc đời, là một người với tướng hảo phi thường.

Kolkata- Buddha Films, the Hollywood-based entertainment outfit of the BK Modi group, is planning to tie up with the leading search engine of the world, Google, to launch a global hunt for the face that will play the title role in the film Buddha, the $120 million venture of the group.
In an exclusive interview with Business Standard, the chairman of Buddha Films, BK Modi, who is now based in Beverly Hills, said preliminary discussion were on with Google for the global talent hunt.
He said a lot of people across the globe had shown interest in playing the role of the Buddha, but not one matched the image of the Buddha.
“A leading actor of the Japanese film industry has approached us for the role. But it was not an ideal match. We want to do the film in a way that it becomes a reference point for Buddhists and for mankind,” he said.
According to Modi, the modalities of the hunt were still being discussed with Google.
He made it clear that the hunt would be based on images of the Buddha generated by software engineers in Silicon Valley.
“The software engineers have come up with wonderful images based on history and other information available from various Buddhist societies. We need a face that fits those images. The character of the man who will play the Buddha is also important,” he added.
Several parallel streams have created different images of the Buddha. The Buddha was born six centuries before Christ in Kapilavastu, on the border of present-day India and Nepal, into a princely family, and had forbidden the creation of any image of himself.
The Buddha was represented by an empty throne, or a pair of feet, or a wheel (kala chakra).
Respecting this advice, Buddhists did not create any image of the Buddha till more than 500 years after his death, when artists of the Gandhara school in Kandahar combined Indo-Grecian influences, and Indian sculptors at Mathura created his first images.
Three astounding images of the Buddha were destroyed by the Taliban in the Bamiyan hills in Afghanistan in the recent past. Stylised images of the Buddha can be seen in the Ajanta and Ellora caves. Hindus, respecting his divinity, later said the Buddha was an “avatar” or incarnation of Vishnu, and created another type of image of the Buddha.
Contemporary texts described the Buddha as one who radiated the eternal peace and “nirvana” that he had attained in his life, and one with perfect eyes, elongated ear-lobes and exquisite limbs.
Similar high profile movies on religious personalities, like the recent movie on the last days of Jesus Christ, were preceded by a limited search because the role was narrowed down to Caucasian actors despite the West Asian origin of the founder of Christianity, said a leading Indian producer who had earlier produced Satyajit Ray films.
“Buddha” is the first project of the film company.
It is to be directed by noted director Shekhar Kapoor, known for the epic period movie Elizabeth, on the medieval queen of England. He was in Kolkata for the 2550th Buddha Jayanti celebrations.
Modi is the president of Mahabodhi Society of India.
He pointed out that the software engineers appointed for creating the images of the Buddha were those who created the images in the Hollywood blockbuster Lord of the Rings.
Lord of the Rings got Oscar nomination for its special effects.
After Buddha, the group will produce 2-3 more big budget Hollywood movies which would be launched globally.
