Phật tử và tín đồ Ky Tô Giáo cầu nguyện cho một tử tội công dân Úc gốc Việt

Melbourne - Úc Châu. Khoảng hơn 1000 người đã kéo đến chật cả giáo đường lớn nhất Úc Châu ngày hôm qua để cầu nguyện cho tử tù Nguyễn Tường Vân.

Tín đồ Ky Tô Giáo và tu sĩ Phật giáo đã kết hợp cử hành buổi tụng kinh cầu nguyện tại giáo đường St Patrick’s, Miền Ðông Melbourne.

Nguyễn Tường Vân, 25 tuổi, người đã đến Úc Châu 25 năm về trước, vào lúc một tháng tuổi, sau khi được hạ sinh trong một trại tỵ nạn Thái Lan, đang chờ đợi bản án tử hình tại Trại Giam Singapore’s Changi tại Tân Gia Ba, có thể là trước cuối tháng này về tội buôn lậu bạch phiến năm 2002. Với bản án này, theo luật lệ của Tân Gia Ba thì Nguyễn Tường Vân sẽ bị hành quyết bằng phương pháp treo cổ. Theo lời khai của Nguyễn Tường Vân, anh ta can dự vào hoạt động này vì muốn kiếm tiền trả nợ cho một người em song sanh cũng can tội buôn bán ma túy vào ba năm trước.

Chính phủ Úc, Thủ Tướng và Bộ Trưởng Tư Pháp Úc đã từng kêu gọi chính phủ Tân Gia Ba khoan hồng, họ đã làm hết mọi cách về mặt pháp lý để cứu vớt mạng sống của Nguyễn TườngVân nhưng không thành công, tất cả còn lại là tùy vào tài ngoại giao của các lãnh tụ chính trị và chiến dịch vận động không mệt mỏi bởi những người yểm trợ cho Nguyễn Tường Vân.

Trong buổi cầu nguyện ngày hôm qua, Cha xứ Peter Hansen khẩn cầu Ðức Chúa biến đổi trái tim bằng đá Tân Gia Ba, những người đã từ chối khoan hồng, đã bác đơn xin ân xá của Nguyễn Tường Vân vào tuần trước.

Bà Kim Nguyễn, mẹ của Nguyễn Tường Vân đã được bà Elizabeth Lasry, phu nhân luật sư gia đình của bà Nguyễn Kim, Lex Lasry, và Russell Thirgood, chủ tịch tổ chức Ân Xá Quốc Tế Úc Châu (Amnesty International Australia) ở bên cạnh động viên.

Chư Tăng chùa Quang Minh ở Melbourne cũng có mặt tụng kinh cầu nguyện trong buổi lễ này.

Trong một giọng dịu dàng và bình tĩnh, bà Nguyễn cầu nguyện xin cho những ai có thẩm quyền trong sự sống và chết của con bà sẽ được lương tâm và lòng từ thúc đẩy mà phán quyết nhẹ tay.

Sau buổi cầu nguyện, Ông Lasry một lần nữa đã điện thoại đến Thủ tướng Úc John Howard để trực tiếp “mượn thẩm quyền của văn phòng Thủ Tướng” để cứu vớt cuộc đời của Nguyễn TườngVân.

Và Cha Xứ Peter Norden của tổ chức Jesuit Phụng Sự Xã Hội, người tuần trước đã thỉnh cầu Ðức Giáo Hoàng Benedict can thiệp cho Nguyễn Tường Vân, nói rằng sự khẩn nài như thế không phải là tiếng vang ngoại giao.

Ông nói “Rất rõ ràng, đây là một trạng thái chân thật trong niềm tin của phẩm cách của tất cả mọi đời sống”.

Catholics and Buddhists pray to cheat hangman

MORE than 1000 people filled Australia's biggest church yesterday to pray for the life of Nguyen Tuong Van.

The Catholic faithful joined Buddhist monks who chanted mantras while Corinthians spoken in Vietnamese echoed inside St Patrick's Cathedral, East Melbourne.

Nguyen, 25, who arrived in Australia just months old after being born in a Thai refugee camp, awaits execution on death row in Singapore's Changi Prison, probably before this month ends, for importing heroin in 2002.

With all legal avenues exhausted, all that remains is diplomacy by political leaders and the tireless campaigning by Nguyen's supporters.

In a prayer yesterday, Father Peter Hansen asked God to change the "hearts of stone" in Singapore, who have refused clemency, and last week rejected appeals to reconsider. Father Hansen told the congregation they had gathered to seek compassion and mercy for Nguyen, his mother, Kim, and his family, and to pray that "those with power over Van will exercise that power with compassion and wisdom".

Ms Nguyen was flanked by Elizabeth Lasry, the wife of Nguyen's Melbourne QC, Lex Lasry, and Russell Thirgood, president of Amnesty International Australia.

After a chanting of the mantra for the preservation of life by monks of Melbourne's Quang Minh Temple, Father Hansen compared Nguyen to Roman Catholic martyr Sir Thomas More as he awaited execution for alleged treason in 1535.

As Sir Thomas did, Nguyen sits in a cell and "awaits the judgement of those who claim authority to take his life", he said.

His voice raised throughout the cathedral, Father Hansen declared "for the entire world to hear" that hanging Nguyen would save not one life, dissuade one drug courier, assist one addict or avert one tragedy.

"We, the people who are here today in this great cathedral, we are the people of Van's land," he said.

Ms Nguyen, her son's close friends Kelly Ng and Bronwyn Lew and other supporters offered the prayers of intercession.

In a soft, composed voice, Ms Nguyen prayed that those who had the power of life and death over her son be guided by the spirits of justice, mercy and humility.

Ms Ng asked that Ms Nguyen, Nguyen's twin brother — Khoa, whose debts he was to repay by importing the heroin for a Sydney syndicate — and their family be comforted. And Ms Lew prayed for everyone on death rows worldwide, and their families, that humanity "turn away from cruelty, killing and vengeance" and embrace life.

After the service, Mr Lasry again called on Prime Minister John Howard to directly "lend the authority of his office" to saving Nguyen's life.

And Father Peter Norden, of the Jesuit Social Services, who asked Pope Benedict last week to intervene on Nguyen's behalf, said such entreaties were not "megaphone diplomacy".

"It is a clear, honest statement in the belief of the dignity of all life," he said.

Father Norden spoke not far from a plaque set in a red rose garden for the former archbishop of Melbourne Daniel Mannix, which reminded people that, among other injustices, he rejected capital punishment.

■ The human rights activists group Rights Australia has urged companies holding significant investments with the Singapore Government to urge it to spare Nguyen.
