Chhotaudepur, Gujarat, September 1: Preachings of Buddha echoed the tribal heartland on Thursday with Union Railway Minister Laloo Prasad Yadav acting as a messenger of peace from Bihar. In Chhotaudepur to inaugurate 99 km long Vadodara-Chotaudepur gauge conversion project, Yadav made a political statement by mentioning the Buddha’s path of peace for development.
‘‘Gujarat has given leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel to our country. The world is watching us. We cannot afford a repeat of what happened sometime ago in Gujarat. It’s not good for development. We need to keep one thing in mind: Buddha’s preachings have only brought prosperity to the world,’’ Laloo said.
Accepting the request of Minister of State for Railways Naran Rathwa, Laloo announced to a cheering crowd that the Rs 350 crore Chhotaudepur-Dhar broad gauge project would be reviewed for implementation. He also added that the Vadodara-Chhotaudepur project would be completed a year before schedule.
‘‘Survey for the Chhotaudepur-Dhar project was done years ago. We would now revive the project in right earnest. And despite 16 large bridges to be made, I assure you that the Vadodara-Chhotaudepur broad gauge would be ready in a year-and-a-half,’’ he said.
An impromptu announcement of a Rs 1 lakh cash award from Railways for the dancing troupe that presented a welcome tribal jive in front of Laloo cavalcade drew a big round of applause from the crowd.
In his inimitable style, Laloo claimed he was making profits in Railways despite reducing travel tickets by Re 1 each. ‘‘Railway is not for profits. Otherwise it would not have started in the first place. The moment you lay a line, it translates into development. I promise that despite the long time needed for erecting 16 large bridges on the section, the project would be completed in one-and-a-half year, a year before the proposed time,’’ Laloo said.
Earlier, Rathwa, whose constituency the project would serve, thanked Laloo for accepting and pushing the project through the Union Cabinet.
‘‘People of Chhotaudepur who’ve been demanding it since 30 years now, can take a shorter route to Vadodara. It would bring prosperity and development to this region,’’ Rathwa said.
