Chicago- July 02, 2006. Một vị danh tăng Phật Giáo trong chuyến du hành Mỹ Quốc sẽ dừng chân tại Elmhurst, và đã thu hút tín chúng từ các thành phố ngoại ô và xa hơn nữa tận Mississipi.

Hòa Thuợng Tinh Vân, 80, người sáng lập Phật Giáo Phật Quang Sơn tại Đài Loan. đã đến thăm viếng Trường Trung Học York để chủ trì buổi lễ “ Thọ trì Tam Qui”và Ngũ Giới.

Jackie Tung, đến cùng với bạn của cô từ St.Louis để dự lễ Thọ trì Ngũ Giới, phát nguyện rằng “ Tôi xin vâng giữ điều học là không nói dối, không trộm cắp, không sát sanh và không tà dâm.

Mặc dù phần đông dân chúng đến Đại lễ từ Chicago, một số ít đến từ xa tận Detroit, Kansas và cả Mississippi. Giới đàn được thiết trí một pho tượng Phật với kim bài có khắc lời nguyện bằng Hoa ngữ.

Judy Kord , Chủ tịch Giáo hội Phật Giáo Phật Quang Sơn Quốc Tế chi nhánh Chicago nói“Buổi lễ thọ giới Tam Quy cũng gần giống như lễ rửa tội trong Cơ Đốc Giáo,”

Buổi lễ cho phép những ngươi tham dự thọ trì tam quy của Đức Phật và giáo lý của Ngài. Năm giới cấm cho cư sĩ tại gia là sát sanh, trộm cắp, tà dâm, nói dối và các uống các chất say.

Hòa Thượng Tinh Vân người thành lập Giáo hội Phật Giáo Tiến Bộ Quốc Tế tại Darien và thành lập hơn 200 trung tâm trên thế giới.

Đoàn thể Phật Giáo của Ngài là một tổ chức phi chính phủ duy nhất đã trở thành hội viên của Liên Hiệp Quốc.

Gần đây, chính Phủ Thụy Sĩ đã cúng dường khu đất cho Ngài để xây dựng Trung Tâm Hội Nghị Phật Giáo tại Geneva.

Buddhist master stops in Elmhurst

Mississippi- A Buddhist master touring the United States stopped Saturday in Elmhurst — and drew followers from throughout the suburbs and as far as Mississippi.

Master Hsing Yun, 80, is the founder of the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist order in Taiwan.

Yun visited York Community High School to lead the ritual “Taking Refuge,” and perform the Five Precepts ceremony.

“I came here to make a promise to myself not to lie, not to steal, not to eat meat and not to indulge in sexual misconduct,” said Jackie Tung, who had come with her friends from St. Louis to take part in the Five Precepts ceremony.

Although the majority of people who had come for the ceremony were from Chicago, some came from as far as Detroit, Kansas and even Mississippi. The stage was set with a gold-plated statue of the Buddha and prayers were said in Chinese.

“Taking Refuge ceremony is similar to what baptism is in Christianity,” said Judy Kord, president of the Chicago chapter of the Buddha’s Light International Association.

The ceremony allows participants to take refuge in the Buddha and his teachings.

The Five Precepts are life rules calling for abstinence from killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying and intoxicants.

Master Yun is a founder of the International Buddhist Progress Society in Darien and has founded more than 200 centers around the world.

His Buddha’s Light religious group is the only non-governmental organization to become a member of the United Nations.

Recently the Swiss government donated land to Yun to build a World Buddhist Conference Center in Geneva.
