Ngài Gnanawimala, vị sư người Ðức nổi tiếng vừa viên tịch.

Colombo: ÐÐ Polgasduwe Gnanawimala Maha Thera, vị sư người Ðức cuối cùng từng thọ giới với Ngài Nyanatiloka Maha Thera tại Tu Viện lâm sở Quần Ðảo ( Island Hermitage), Dodanduwa, Tích Lan vừa viên tịch với số tuổi hơn 80. Tang lễ hỏa táng của Ngài được tổ chức tại khuôn viên học đường Malalankara Kanishta Vidyalaya thuộc vùng Katudampe.
Ngài Gnanawimala thế danh là Friedrich Moller. Ông Moller gặp Ngài Asoka Weeraratna, Hony. Thư Ký Hiệp Hội Hoằng Pháp Ðức Quốc trong chuyến du hành cuối cùng tới Ðức vào đầu năm 1953 để thăm dò điều kiện cho việc gửi sang Ðức Quốc một phái đòan Phật Giáo Tích Lan. Một kết quả đầy ý nghĩa đối với Ngài Asoka Weeraratna trong chuyến viếng thăm nước Ðức là sự thu nạp Friedrich Moller, một giáo sư ở Ðại Học Racknow, Hambur để đào tạo, huấn luyện trong sứ mệnh hoằng pháp. Ông Moller đến Tích Lan vào tháng 6 năm 1953.
Hiệp hội Hoằng Pháp Ðức Quốc đài thọ phí tổn cho chuyến đi của giáo sư Moller. Ông trở thành một Ưu Bà Tắc và được đưa đến Tu Viện Quần Ðảo ở Dodanduwa. Ngài Nyanatiloka đã huấn luyện cho ông. Giáo Sư Moller là người Ðức đầu tiên được huấn luyện của hiệp hội hoằng pháp. Hiệp hội dự định cho ông Moller làm một thành viên của phái đoàn Phật Giáo đầu tiên tại Ðức Quốc được dự trù rời Tích Lan năm 1956 ( năm kỷ niệm Khánh Ðản lần thứ 2500). Tuy nhiên, ông chọn lựa ở lại Tích Lan để hoàn tất khóa huấn luyện và sau đó ông thọ giới Tỳ kheo với pháp danh Gnanawimala.
Ða số thời gian của Sư là sống ở Tu Viện Quần Ðảo do Ngài Nyanatiloka thành lập trong những năm đầu của thế kỷ trước, để tạo cơ hội cho người ngoại quốc, những ai đã ở trên con đường đến với Phật Pháp hoặc mong muốn sống đời sống trong giáo pháp, và sau khi hoàn tất chương trình huấn luyện tại Tu Viện sẽ trở về quốc gia của họ để hoằng dương giáo pháp. Ngài Gnanawimala là pháp lữ thân tình của Ngài Nanavira và Ngài Nanamoli, hai tu sĩ Anh Quốc, những người đến Tích Lan vào đầu thập niên 50 với tính cách những tín đồ tha thiết tầm cầu giáo pháp.

Oct 13, Colombo: Ven. Polgasduwe Gnanawimala Maha Thera, the last of the German monks ordained by Ven. Nyanatiloka Maha Thera at the Island Hermitage (Polgasduwe Tapasa–arama), Dodanduwa has passed away. His cremation took place at school grounds of Malalankara Kanishta Vidyalaya, Katudampe. He was in his mid -eighties at the time of his death.
Ven. Gnanawimala was known as Friedrich Moller in his lay life. He met Asoka Weeraratna, Hony. Secretary of the German Dharmaduta Society during the latter's trip to Germany in early 1953 exploring the suitability of conditions in Germany for the dispatch of a Buddhist mission from Sri Lanka. One significant outcome of Asoka Weeraratna’s visit to Germany in 1953 was the recruitment of Friedrich Moller, a teacher of Rackow College, Hamburg to be trained in Dharmaduta work. Moller arrived in Sri Lanka on 5th June 1953.
The German Dharmaduta Society paid for the passage of Moller. He became an Upasaka and was placed at the Island Hermitage, Dodanduwa. Ven. Nyanatiloka Maha Thera instructed him. Moller was the first German trainee of the Society. It was intended to make Moller a member of the first Buddhist Mission to Germany that was planned to leave Sri Lanka in 1956 (the year of the Buddha Jayanti). However he preferred to remain in Sri Lanka upon completing his period of training and receiving ordination under the name of Bhikkhu Gnanawimala.
He spent much of his time at the Island Hermitage, Polgasduwa which was established by Ven. Nyanatiloka in the early part of the last century to provide the opportunity for those foreigners who either are already on the way to Buddhism, or who wish to live the religious life, and after accomplishing their training at Polgasduwa to return to their native countries in order to work for the Dhamma.
Ven. Gnanawimala was a close friend of Ven. Nanavira and Ven. Nanamoli, the two British monks who arrived in Sri Lanka in the early 1950's as earnest laymen seeking knowledge of the Dhamma.
