Kandana (Sri Lanka) - Trường dạy Giáo Pháp bằng Anh Ngữ Sri Wimalasiri tại Asokaramaya chỉ cách thành phố Kandana 2.5 km hướng về Gampaha. Học Ðường Giáo Pháp Anh Ngữ đưa ra chương trình phục vụ tận tình đến cộng đồng bằng cách giảng dạy cho thanh thiếu niên Phật pháp bằng Anh Văn.

DD Uturumagala Nandasiri Nayake Thera, Sư Cả của chùa và DD Beligaswelle Wijithasiri, đại đệ tử của Sư Cả, cả hai đều là cố vấn của Học Ðường Giáo Pháp, ngôi trường mà lúc bắt đầu, với sự hộ trì của hai tu sĩ và 20 học sinh, trong vòng một năm, con số học sinh tăng lên 80.

ÐÐ Pangnasiri Thera, người đi tiên phong trong kế hoạch Học Ðường Giáo Pháp Anh Ngữ là một cựu giảng viên Anh Văn và Pali tại Ðại Học Phật Giáo và là một phụ giảng trong ngành xã hội học.

Ông nói rằng Học Ðường Giáo Pháp đã khởi sự nhằm mục đích đào tạo học sinh, những người thành thục Phật Pháp và Anh Ngữ, và dĩ nhiên, với giới luật tốt đẹp. Ông nói thêm “Tôi được sinh ra và lớn lên trong khu vực này và thành đạt trình độ giáo dục cao cấp từ Ðại Học Peradeniya với trình độ Anh Văn trung cấp, điều làm cho tôi thấu hiểu được Anh Ngữ đã chiếm một địa vị như thế nào trong thế giới hiện đại. Tôi học tiểu học trường làng và sau đó đã học Anh Văn với những vị giáo thọ rất giỏi. Tôi đã đương đầu với rất nhiều khó khăn nên tôi hiểu rõ vấn đề mà học sinh trong vùng của chúng ta có thể đối diện trong phạm vi này. Tôi đã mời thỉnh một số giảng viên Anh Ngữ đạo đức trong vùng và bắt đầu Học Ðường Giáo Pháp Anh Ngữ này từ năm 2000. Trước hết, học sinh được dạy kiến thức căn bản về Anh Ngữ để có thể hiểu Phật giáo, sau đó thì chúng tôi trực tiếp dạy Phật pháp bằng Anh Ngữ.

Như học sinh đã học hỏi từ vựng mang ý nghĩa của những vật dụng mà họ nhìn thấy trong chùa như hình tượng Ðức Phật, Cội Bồ Ðề, Ngôi Tháp, nhang, đèn v.v… Họ có thể hiểu những gì họ đang được giảng dạy.

Hiện giờ thì con số học sinh đã tăng lên đến 200. Học Ðường Giáo Pháp bắt đầu với chỉ một lớp học, hiện nay đã phát triển thành học viện sáu lớp.
Cũng có một Học Ðường Giáo Pháp Trung Cấp thuộc Phật Giáo Sinhala với một lịch sử lâu dài và khoảng trên 600 học sinh.

ÐÐ Pangnasiri nhận xét rằng nếu học sinh tiếp tục theo đuổi sự học tập với tính cách như trên cho đến đợt khảo thí cuối cùng của chương trình Học Ðường Giáo Pháp, ông sẽ không cần đến giáo thọ bên ngoài cho những lớp thấp hơn. Ở các lớp cao hơn, ông dự trù sẽ mời những giảng viên đại học đến dạy tại Học Ðường Giáo Pháp.

ÐÐ Hiệu Trưởng nói thêm rằng ông cũng dự trù sẽ cấp học bổng ngoại quốc cho học sinh xuất sắc. ÐÐ cũng tán thán sự hợp tác của phụ huynh học sinh đã làm cho nỗ lực của ông được thành tựu.

Kandana (Sri Lanka) ── The Sri Wimalasiri English Dhamma School at Asokaramaya, Polpithimukalana, is just two-and-a-half kilometres off Kandana town towards Gampaha. The Dhamma School renders yeoman services to the community by teaching the children Buddhism in English.

The Venerable Uturumagala Nandasiri Nayake Thera, chief incumbent of the temple and Venerable Beligaswelle Wijithasiri Thera, the chief disciple, are both advisors to the Dhamma School. It was heartening to observe the present developed State of the Dhamma School which was started, with the blessings of the two chief monks with twenty students and within the same year, the number of students had increased up to eighty.

Venerable Polpithimukalane Pangnasiri Thera, the pioneer of the Dhamma School, is a former English instructor at Buddhist and Pali University and an assistant lecturer in sociology.

He said that the Dhamma School was started in order to produce students who were well-versed in Buddha Dhamma and English and of course, with good discipline. "I was born and bred in this area and obtained higher education from the University of Peradeniya in the English medium, which made me understand the place English occupies in the modern world. I got my primary education from the village school and later was able to study English under very good teachers.

I did it facing a lot of hardship so I fully understand the problems students of our area could face in this sphere," the Thera said.

"I invited some well-educated English teachers of the area and started this Dhamma School in January 2000. First and foremost the students were given a basic knowledge of English in order to understand Buddhism. Then we directly started off to teach Buddhism in English.

As the students had learnt the words denoting the objects what they saw in the temple, such as the Buddha images, Pagoda, Bodhi Tree, oil lamp, incense etc; they were able to understand what was being taught to them.

"Today the number of students has increased up to 200. The Dhamma School which started with just one class, has now developed into a six-class institute.

It is a magnanimous gesture on their part, Venerable Pangnasiri Thera said.

There is a Sinhala Medium Dhamma School too, which has a long history. It has more than 600 students.

The Thera observed that if the students continued to study in that manner up to the final test of the Dhamma School, he would not need teachers from outside for the lower classes. When it comes to higher classes, he expects to get lecturers in the universities to teach in the Dhamma School.

The Principal Thera adds that he expects to offer foreign scholarships to the students who excel in their studies. He also appreciated the co-operation of the parents to make his effort a success.
