Britain's first Buddhist stupa has been consecrated near the city of Leeds after a year of meticulous building by a team of Yorkshire stone-masons and a group of monks who had never before left the kingdom of Bhutan.
The stupa, consecrated yesterday, is the latest visitor attraction in the north of England, following Europe's largest tree house at Alnwick Castle and the fish-scented trawler museum in Grimsby.
Shaped like a drain-clearing plunger or a hand-bell, the stupa was commissioned and funded by David Viscount Lascelles, the former producer of Inspector Morse and other television dramas, who now runs the Harewood estate near Leeds.
A lifelong enthusiast for the Himalayas, he got the idea of making a British version of the distinctive buildings while filming a documentary in Bhutan.
"I have been intrigued for some time with the idea of having Himalayan architectural features among the rhododendrons and other Himalayan plants that grow round the lake at Harewood, as they do in so many English country gardens," said Lord Lascelles, who met a spiritual leader, Lama Sonam Chopel, on his visit to the mountain state.
"Meeting the lama, who has built over 100 stupas in Bhutan, made it possible to turn this dream into a reality," Lord Lascelles told 'The Guardian'.The 77-year-old lama and a team of craftsmen monks came to Harewood last year to build the stupa in grounds which the Viscount's family have tended for more than 250 years.
None of the members of the group had ever left Bhutan or flown in a plane, but they immediately bonded with a team of local masons who helped construct the dome on top of a carved stone sphere, cube and triangle.
The stupa's consecration was accompanied with ceremonies led by lama Baso Karpo, the abbot of the Phajoding Gompa monastery near Bhutan's capital Thumphu.
A range of everyday and religious objects essential to the stupa's role as a shrine are hidden inside the building. Bhutanese proverbs describe an empty stupa as being "like a bowl without water".
