Tưởng niệm một tu sĩ Phật Giáo cư dân Novato, California

NOVATO, Calif. (AP) - Một buổi lễ được tổ chức ngày hôm nay để tưởng nhớ một thanh niên trẻ cư dân Novato, người đã thọ giới của một tu sĩ Phật Giáo sau khi qua đời tại Thái Lan.

Bằng hữu và thân nhân của Joshua Goldberg, 23 tuổi, nói rằng anh là một thanh niên ôn hòa, người đi khắp thế giới để tầm cầu Niết Bàn. Anh mất tại một bệnh viện ở Bangkok trong tháng vừa qua sau khi bị đột quỵ vì biến chứng của một vết thương làm độc ở chân.

Goldberg đã đến Tu Viện Thamkrabok ở miền bắc Thái Lan với dự định sẽ trở thành một tu sĩ.

Tu viện đã truyền quy giới cho anh như là một tu sĩ sau khi anh chết và chôn cất tàn tro của anh trong tuần rồi tại một hang động trên triền đồi bên cạnh tàn tro của những tu sĩ khác sau khi kết thúc nghi thức tang lễ 3 ngày dành cho những người thánh thiện.
Cha của anh, ông Jim, nói rằng trở về với Phật Giáo đã chuyển hóa đời sống của Goldberg và làm anh thấm nhuần trí tuệ mà anh đã tầm cầu cho suốt cuộc đời.



Buddhist monk from Novato is memorialized


NOVATO, Calif. (AP) - A memorial service is being held today for a young Novato man who was afforded the status of Buddhist monk after he died in Thailand.

Friends and family members say 23-year-old Joshua Goldberg was a sweet young man who traveled the world in search of his Nirvana. He died in a Bangkok hospital last month after suffering a heart attack that resulted from complications from a leg infection.

Goldberg entered the Thamkrabok Monastery in North-Central Thailand in January intending to become a monk.

The monastery ordained him as a monk following his death and buried his ashes last week alongside those of other monks in a hillside cave after a three-day funeral rite reserved for the most holy people.

Goldberg's father, Jim, says turning to Buddhism transformed his son's life and imbued him with a wisdom he had searched for his entire life.
