Hội Nghị Phật Giáo Nhân Gian Thế Giới lần thứ Bảy ở Califonia.

ROSEMEAD, California - Một sự kiện quan trọng trong thế giới Phật Giáo đang âm thầm diễn ra hôm Thứ Hai tại Ðại Học Tây Phương - University of the West. Hội Nghị Phật Giáo Nhân Gian Quốc Tế lần thứ bảy vừa được tổ chức với một số học giả Phật Giáo hàng đầu trên thế giới, những người sẽ diễn thuyết trong tuần lễ nghị hội.

Ðại Học Tây Phương do HT Tinh Vân sáng lập năm 1991, đồng thời HT Tinh Vân cũng là người sáng lập chùa Tây Lai tại Hạt Hacienda, California, một ngôi chùa Phật Giáo lớn nhất nước Mỹ.

Chủ đề nghị hội năm nay là “Phật Giáo Nhân Gian và Khuyến Khích Phát Triển Kinh Tế”. ÐÐ Tuệ Tế, trụ trì chùa Tây Lai nói rằng ông nhận thấy rất nhiều điểm tương đồng giữa nghiên cứu và thực hiện về kinh tế và Phật Giáo. ÐÐ nói “Giữa cung và cầu, cần có một sự quân bình, một sự dung hòa”.

Trong suốt tuần lễ hội nghị, các học giả Phật Giáo từ Anh Quốc, Ý Ðại Lợi, Nam Á và Ðông Nam Á sẽ hiện diện trước đại chúng trình bày các luận thuyết của họ trên việc phát triển kinh tế toàn cầu từ tầm nhìn của Phật Giáo. Các bài luận thuyết được đưa ra trong hội nghị sẽ được xuất bản và lưu hành rộng rãi trong thế giới Phật Giáo.

Ðồng thời Hội nghị cũng là để thực hiện hoài bảo của HT Tinh Vân về cái nhìn của Phật Giáo áp dụng vào thế giới thực tế. HT sáng lập Phật Giáo Nhân Gian đã đánh dấu một sự khởi đầu từ tầm quan trọng của Phật Giáo trên thế giới tâm linh.

Trong một bài diễn văn trước đại chúng vào buổi tối thứ Hai khai mạc hội nghị, HT Tinh Vân nói rằng truyền thống Phật giáo khuyến khích con người đạt được sự giàu có sung túc như là một cách để giúp đỡ gia đình, bạn bè và cộng đồng.

Ðiểm trọng yếu của giáo lý Ðức Phật trên vấn đề giàu có sung túc là đạt được nó bằng sự lương thiện và dùng nó để giúp đỡ người khác.

Buddhist scholars gather for conference

ROSEMEAD - A major event in the Buddhist world quietly got under way Monday at the University of the West.
The seventh International Conference on Humanistic Buddhism kicked off with a small gathering of some of the world's top Buddhist scholars, who will present papers during the weeklong conference.

The University of the West sits atop Walnut Grove Avenue. It was founded in 1991 by Master Hsing Yun, who founded Hsi Lai Temple in Hacienda Heights, the largest Buddhist temple in the Western hemisphere.

The theme of this year's conference is Humanistic Buddhism and Sustainable Economic Development. The Venerable Hui Chi, abbot of Hsi Lai Temple in Hacienda Heights, said he sees much in common between the studies and practices of economics and Buddhism.

"Between supply and demand, there's a need to balance, to harmonize," Hui Chi said.

During a series of seminars this week, scholars from Italy, Britain, South Asia and Southeastern Asia will present to the public and their peers treatises on global economic development from a Buddhist perspective. The papers submitted at the conference will be published in a journal widely read in the Buddhist world.

"The idea is we're trying to prevent inbreeding of ideas from this university," said Dr. Ananda Guruge, dean of academic affairs at the university.

The practice allows critique of the university scholar's works, preventing an "ivory tower" syndrome, said The Venerable Bhante Chao Chu, abbot of the Rosemead Buddhist Monastery.

The conference also fulfills Master Hsing Yun's vision of Buddhism applied to the real world. The master's founding of Humanistic Buddhism marked a departure from Buddhism's emphasis on the spirit world, Guruge said.

In a written statement read Monday night at the inauguration of the conference, the master said Buddhist tradition encourages people to acquire wealth as a way to help their families, friends and community.

"The heart of Buddha's teachings on wealth is to acquire it honestly and use it to help others," he wrote.
