Buddhism subject of free course
Central County Briefs
Originally published December 25, 2005
Cedarhurst Unitarian Universalist Church in Finksburg is offering a course in "Buddhist Teachings 2: Art and Philosophy" from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesdays Jan. 10 to Feb. 7 at 2912 Club House Road.
The goal of the course is to review the basic message of enlightenment, while looking at related art and philosophy.
The story of the Buddhist religion will be told through some of its images and more philosophical concerns, including the emptiness (shunyata) of dharmas and the "emptiness of emptiness."
Buddhist philosophy is a life-affirming spiritual message adaptable in many different ways. This course is a continuation of "Buddhist Teachings 1: From Samsara to Nirvana," but it is not necessary to have taken that course.
The class is free, but students should obtain a copy of The Experience of Buddhism: Sources and Interpretations by John S. Strong for course readings.
Students should also try to get Buddha: Radiant Awakening, edited by Jackie Menzies, for seeing the art to be discussed.
