By Jennie Dennett

Buddhists in festive mood
By Jennie Dennett

A TENTED city sprung up on Ulverston's outer fringes this week as the Manjushri Kadampa Meditation Centre's 14th summer festival swung into action.

With the addition of a phalanx of portaloos creating a pop festival ambience, around 2,800 people have descended on the centre's home at Conishead Priory, reports Jennie Dennett.

The festival-goers have travelled from across the globe with 50 different nations represented among the crowds.

Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso is the star attraction at the two-week event, which draws to a close on August 6. The Tibetan meditation master has been based at the Ulverston centre since 1977 and is the spiritual leader of the New Kadampa Tradition of Buddhism (NKT).

During the festival, Geshe Kelsang is giving teachings which this year focus on the Buddha of Compassion, with the second's week's sessions concentrating specifically on learning about Buddhist practices for loved ones who have died or who are dying.

Among the followers en route to the many dinner tents, where wholesome vegetarian soup is served every evening, were friends Pedro Erreguerena and Sigfrido Chaim, of Mexico City.

"This is such an outstanding, major event, even if you are on the other side of the world, you have to come," said Mr Chaim, 54.

Mr Erreguerena, 55, who is at his fifth festival, said he made the trip to see Geshe-Kelsang and hear "the poetry of his teachings".

"I come firstly for the teachings, secondly for the atmosphere, the friendship and the warmth of the people there are people from all over the world with the same thoughts and feelings."

Kelsang Samdrub, a 44-year-old Canadian who has recently been ordained as a Buddhist monk, has similarly returned for his fifth festival. The former Canadian military man started studying Buddhism seven years ago and says he feels happier now.

"The first time I came it was to meet my spiritual guide, I fell in love with Kadampa Buddhism, I knew I had to meet Geshe Kelsang and then I met all these people at the festival and I had to keep coming back. It's a way to revitalise my batteries."

Attendance at the festival is down by about 800 this year, something NKT secretary Jim Belither partly puts down to the addition of a Berlin festival to the Buddhist calendar.

But Kadampa Buddhism is still on the rise, boasting 917 centres worldwide compared to just 20 in the early 90s.

"People are looking for something more than material things," said Mr Belither. "We also get interest from people in poorer countries, it's not like it's just an affluent Westerners' hobby.

"People are interested in finding something more to life... either they haven't had a religious background or it hasn't been satisfying so they have gone to a Kadampa group and developed an interest."
