Fo Guang Shan, an international Buddhist secular order with headquarters in Taiwan, is sponsoring once again the annual “Sounds of the Human World,” the Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s Buddhist Hymn Composition Competition.
Past Cebuano winners in this international competition were Rochelle “Raki” Vega, who sang the 2003 winning pieces We Are One, composed by Jude Thaddeus Gitamondoc, and Isang Panalangin, written by Joseph Abella. In 2004, another Cebuana, Rhea Mae Sadaya, bagged a top spot with her interpretation of Silently I Recite the Amitabha’s Name.
After the preliminary selection to be held in IBPS-Manila, whereby six entries will be selected, the Philippine team will fly to Taiwan to compete with teams from other countries from as far as the US, Canada, Brazil, France and Australia.
Grand prize for the final competition is NT$100,000. First prize is NT$50,000. Ten honorary prizes worth NT$10,000 each will be given out.
To qualify, compositions may either use English, Tagalog or Chinese. The lyrics should be taken from or based on the selected verses and poetry of Venerable Master Hsing Yun.
Entries must be new, original compositions; have not been published, entered into any other competition, or be a commissioned work.
Composition must be submitted with musical score and audiotape. There will be no limit as to the number of entries submitted.
Registration is until May 15. Deadline for submission of entries will be on May 31.
