2550th Buddha Jayanthi on international scale

The Mahabodhi Society of Sri Lanka yesterday announced that moves are under way by their society with the participation of national and international Buddhist organisations, to mark the historic 2550th year of the advent of Theravada Buddhism, The Buddha Jayanthi in Sri Lanka.
The Buddha Jayanthi falls on the Full Moon day of Wesak in May, 2006.
President of the Mahabodhi Society, Ven. Banagala Upatissa Nayaka Thera said that the society will be celebrating the event with a series of Buddhist programmes throughout the country for several months beginning from January next year.
Ven. Upatissa Nayaka Thera was speaking at a press conference organised by the Society, to announce their plans to celebrate the Buddha Jayanthi.
The Ven. Thera said they would invite Ven. Dalai Lama to grace the festivities. Celebrations will be arranged both nationally and internationally, thus giving the event its due prominence.
An international conference will be held in Sri Lanka with the participation of eminent Buddhist prelates and scholars from every corner the world. A ceremony will be held to ordain some 2,250 children from a number of countries into the Buddha Sasana as a part of the ceremony, Ven. Upatissa Thera said.
Referring to the last ceremony of Buddha Jayanthi which took place in 1956 , the thera said, " When the 2500 Buddha Jayanthi was celebrated internationally in 1956, India and Sri Lanka played a major role in organising the event. The Mahabodhi Society has undertaken the foremost role in 2006 in organising the events," he said.
"The 2006 celebrations of the 2550th Buddha Jayanthi is mainly centred on promoting cooporation and solidarity among the Buddhist countries, " he added.
"It is also aimed at highlighting various issues which affect the Buddhist public. Steps will be taken to make the international community aware of these issues, " he said.
Kalasuri Edwin Ariyadasa, Deputy General Secretary of Mahabodhi Society of Sri Lanka , Ven. Thiniyawala Palitha Thera were also present at the press conference.
