Buddhist hymns get an airing
The Star, July 26, 2005
Serdang, Selangor (Malaysia) -- BUDDHIST Sunday Schools in Malaysia recently went in search of their own singing sensations during the first Inter-Dharma School Hymn Singing Competition held at the Nalanda Buddhist Society in Serdang recently.
Eight Buddhist organisations from Kuala Lumpur and Selangor took part in the competition, which was divided into four categories – solo and choir for primary and secondary schools, respectively. A panel of composers, lyricists and performers from the Buddhist cultural community judged the contestants.
The Kajang Buddhist Centre Primary School Choir emerged the champion in their category, while the Buddhist Institute Sunday Dhamma School Secondary Group Choir won in their category.
Nalanda Dharma School student Melvin Lee won the primary solo contest and managed to pick up a special award for best overall performance with his rendition of Nirvana.
Liang Chay Jiang of the Subang Jaya Buddhist Association won the solo contest in the secondary category.
Organising chairman Nandini Tan said the event was organised to draw attention and to renew interest in Malaysian Buddhist hymns.
"We want to make it a platform for Buddhist Sunday Schools to work together for the betterment of the community," she said.
