KỶ NIỆM ĐẠI LỄ TAM HỢP Ở MYANMAR

BY ROHAN L. Jayetilleke, Daily News (Sri Lanka), April 27, 2005

The Vesak celebrations in Myanmar

BY ROHAN L. Jayetilleke, Daily News (Sri Lanka), April 27, 2005

THE month of May or Kason is the second month of the traditional calendar, the first being April. Kason means either to pour water or water shortage according to Myanmar legends.

The month of Kason for Buddhists in Myanmar is the most important month of the calendar. It is connected with the Birth of Prince Siddhartha, Enlightenment and passing away.

The Bodhi Trees found in monasteries of Myanmar are grown out of seeds brought either from Buddha Gaya or Sri Lanka's Anuradhapura Sacred Bodhi Tree. The earliest historical evidence of planting a Bodhi Tree in Myanmar was in the reign of King Narapatisithu (1173-1210 AD) of Bagan dynasty.

It was during his rule that a Myanmar Bhikkhu Ashin Kassapa Maha Thera went to Sri Lanka and on his return brought back some seeds of the Sri Maha Bodhi of Anuradhapura.

The other kings who planted Bodhi Trees were Uzana of Pinya dynasty who planted in 1340 AD, Narapati and Maha Thiha Thura of Inwa dynasty 1442 and 1468 AD, respectively.

They obtained seeds from the Sacred Bodhi at Anuradhapura.

King Dhammazed of Mon dynasty obtained the seeds from Sri Lanka Sacred Bodhi at Anuradhapura in 1471 and planted them on a hillock now known as Bodhikon in the north west of Shwedagon Pagoda.

In 1800 AD, King Bodawpaya of Konbaung dynasty despatched a party of scholars to study at Bodh Gaya Vihara, Buddha Gaya, India and on their return they brought back descriptions and drawings of the Buddha Gaya Bodhi and two saplings presented by the Bhikkhus in charge of Buddha Gaya.

The King himself ceremonially planted them in the precincts of Mingun Pagoda south west of his palace. In 1834 saplings were brought from Buddha Gaya and in 1860 saplings were brought from Sri Lanka.

The tradition of planting Bodhi Trees continues in Myanmar in Upper Myanmar. Monywathere is a place where one thousand Bodhis stand called Bodhi Tahtaung (One thousand Bodhi Trees).

Many folk rhymes and songs of Myanmar describe the Kason festival (festival of pouring water to Bodhi Trees) and it is the form and manner of observing the Vesak Full Moon Day.

One such song of antiquity says, "at the Nyaung Yey festival - Meza people all devout - Duly fall in prayer and pour water to the Bodhi Tree". Today the best place to watch this kason festival of vesak is Shwedagon pagoda.

The other such paces are Bawdigon Pagoda and the Shwe Kyet yet Pagoda in and near Mandalay.

At Shwedagon pagoda's south east quarter the Kason Festival is held on Vesak Day. A brilliant pageant precedes with men, women and children dressed in their national costumes. They carry pots of water with Thabyoy sprigs and flowers in them.

They chant Paritta in unison. Bhikkhus administer the precepts and a brief exposition on the rite of pouring water to the Bodhi.

Pali verses are sung in praise of the Buddha, Dhamma and the Sangha. Then begins the pouring water to the Bodhi. All participants are served with light refreshments.

Village folk observe their Vesak rites at village Pagoda or Vihara where there is a Bodhi.

Village lasses balance the water pots and rhymically march to the Bodhi. They are followed by the youthful young men of the village playing wind and percussion instruments to keep in tempo with the strides of the lasses.

Another rite in this dry weather is to recover fish, turtle from nearby dry water resources such as ponds, lakes and streamlets and let them free into watery places.

Thus Myanmar is given pride of place to the traditional music, dance and above all veneration of the Buddha. The day ends with lots of human feelings in their hearts to live in amity with one another till the dawn of next Vesak.
